Tyler Perry's reign just wont let up.This Easter weekend marks yet another installment of his Madea franchise.Packed with laughs, drama and today's young trendy celebs (Bow Wow,Lauren London,Teyana Taylor),Big Happy Family was a comical treat. After hearing negative criticism on the movie,I was skeptical about going to watch it.But after viewing it, I reinstated my mantra on seeing movies for yourself before judging whether or not to go and see it based on someone elses opinion.Tyler Perry rarely disappoints me.If you enjoy Tyler Perry's Madea-centered movies then you'll appreciate this installment just the same or even more. What made this Madea movie better is the induced drama factor and saturated family ethic. It was the dynamic family values and shocking drama of Soul Food mixed with the sadness and inept procreation of love lost and forgiveness of Imitation of Life and sprinkled with the intense lucrativeness and companionship turbulence of popular television show, The Game.Utilizing the exact dialogue & script from the even funnier play of the same name,Perry explored the trials and extremities of a modern southern family with everyday issues with added extensive drama & comic relief.
Breakout actress,Teyana Taylor was clearly the star (next to Madea) who owned the screen every time her character appeared. Her ominous neck twisting, hyper gum chewing, butch queen improvisation and bravado name calling (Byroooiononononnnnnne) was refreshing and a extremely filarious (fuckin' hilarious) ode to the satire of babymama's.She gave me Sha-neh-neh 2o11,loved it! Bow Wow,on the other hand. overacted at times, but his screen presence & crying scenes were genuine just as it was on Roll Bounce. However, his imitation of his ghetto babymama in one scene of the movie was a little too convincing.Pause....And Lauren London's character was visually dry and reminiscent of a poor reincarnation of NewNew on ATL.Natalie Diselle was ok.I wish she would have gave me more ghetto-tinged comical version of a housewife sorta like her character in B.A.P.S but she settled with the stereotypical mean African American woman instead.Loretta Devine was the true pioneer amongst this cast. Her allegiance for portraying a genuine black mother exudes on any screen.Madea,Brown and Cora's camaraderie on the Maury show was immense.Overall,Madea's Big Happy Family was a progression from the previous movies and definitely worth the watch.I give it a B-.
